Rachel Frances Counselling
About Me
Queer, Integrative, Trauma-Informed, Relational Counsellor
Throughout my life, I have dedicated my time to promoting people's rights, advocating for social justice, and supporting marginalised groups in society.
I've worked in charities and non-profit organisations for over 15 years. I've held a wide variety of different roles from mentoring young people experiencing homelessness, to supporting refugees with their integration into UK life, and most recently managing a counselling service for survivors of sexual violence. I understand the challenges of working in the third sector in terms of managing work stress, burnout and vicarious trauma.
My road to becoming a counsellor was driven by my own personal experiences of accessing counselling during difficult times in my life - I've been in your seat. Having lived experience helps me to understand some of the issues you may want to talk about, which supports us to connect on a deeper, more relational level.
I'm an advocate for the power of lived experience and the potential for post-traumatic growth and resilience.
My Experience
Trauma
For several years I managed a counselling service for survivors of sexual violence, ensuring victim/survivors of sexual trauma had space to safely explore what happened to them. Having worked with trauma clients, I understand the importance of trust and safety between client and counsellor, and how important it can be to develop your personal resources whilst in counselling. Whilst not every client I work with has experienced trauma, my approach with every client focuses on utilising trauma-informed principles of Safety, Trustworthiness, Choice, Collaboration, Empowerment, and Cultural Consideration.
Diversity
I have extensive experience working with refugee and migrant communities in Bristol, and have worked therapeutically with clients through the use of interpreters. My work with diversity has taught me to acknowledge how race, culture, gender, sexuality, ability, age, and socioeconomic class influences our therapeutic relationship, and that I need to continuously reflect on my own assumptions and privileges to ensure accessible and inclusive practice. I always aim to work within the diversity of our differing identities and lived experiences. I am also committed to anti-oppressive practice through acknowledgement of structural and systemic inequalities in society.
Young Adults
I am experienced in working with young adults aged 18-30. I previously volunteered for a young people's counselling service where I worked collaboratively and creatively with young people experiencing anxiety, depression, as well as difficulties with life transitions, identity and sexuality. In my private practice, the majority of my work involves helping young adults through life transitions such as starting university, managing university life, finishing university and working out where life is heading next. A lot of my experience with young adults includes working on self-image, self-esteem, identity, relationships, is it ok to be me? .
LGBTQ+ / Gender Sexuality and Relationship Diversity (GSRD)
As a Queer Counsellor and proud member of the LGBTQ+ community, my counselling practice is always LGBTQ+ affirmative. I hold a positive view of all LGBTQ+ identities and relationship diversities. I previously volunteered for an LGBTQ+ counselling service in Bristol, as well as having several years experience in private practice working with LGBTQ+ / GSRD clients. I can work with you on issues such as coming out as LGBTQ+, social and medical transition, internalised homophobia/ queerphobia, navigating relationship diversity, and experience of sexual violence as an LGBTQ+ person.
Neurodivergence
I have experience working with neurodivergent clients and as such I can easily adapt my practice to meet your individual needs. I have worked with clients who are wondering if they are neurodivergent, as well as clients who are coming to terms with a recent diagnosis or a diagnosis in later life. My approach to neurodivergence is to find out how your brain works so that we can find out what works for you. Your experience of counselling is important to me and I'm happy to have a chat around your specific access needs.
